If only the Beatles had been Canadian

One last Pompatus of Pete blog before the big name change. That's coming soon.

I promise.

This one is prompted by mistakenly watching American Idol the other night. It happened to be Beatle night. All the songs had to be Beatles songs. Most of the contestants claimed to "not know" or "had never heard" the songs they performed.

I ain't buying it.

It was an excuse for not being able to sing a decent song that didn't need to be auto tuned, or sampled, or whatever it is the these kids are relying on in music nowadays
So, the Beatles.

The Beatles were the best band. Ever. Period. End of story.

Even though this is just an opinion, it's an accurate one.
Even though you may disagree, you'd be wrong.
...and you'd have to prove to me otherwise.

Can't do it, can you?

Check this out....

They created pop music
They didn’t embellish it or make it better – they created it.  It started with their first album and came on strong with Rubber Soul and Revolver and songs like ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, ‘Penny Lane’, ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ were the fruition and evolution of a new style of music.  They were the trigger of a revolution that became pop culture.

They disbanded in their prime
John Lennon was only 30 when the Beatles broke up.   McCartney was 28.  George Harrison was 27.  Ringo Starr was 30.  They still had youth and they still had many years remaining in their prime but they stopped while they were on top, ending a string of success that is unparalleled.

Imagine Muhammed Ali retiring in 1974 instead of 1981 and what you have is the Beatles.

Imagine Elvis retiring in 1968 before becoming a shell of himself by his death, and what you have is the Beatles.

Imagine the Rolling Stones retiring in 1973, or U2 in 1987. If they had, they might have come close.

But they didn't. Too bad. That's a difference maker.

Where some bands play on (and on, and on, and on – i.e., The Rolling Stones, The Who), The Beatles stopped and became iconic.   No band ever called it quits at a greater time. Impeccable timing, even if it wasn’t planned to be that way at the time.

I mean seriously, would any of us have really wanted to see a new Beatles album in 1977 at #2 on the charts one notch behind Saturday Night Fever?

Not me.

They stopped touring at the height of their career
The Beatles, quite amazingly did not tour to support the 2nd half of their career.

The didn't tour to support the following albums...

Revolver
Sgt. Pepper
Magical Mystery Tour
The White Album
Yellow Submarine
Let it Be
Abbey Road

Name one band that ever put seven albums equal to that out in their career. Never mind supporting such albums with a multi million dollar tour.

I'll give you a minute.

Are you done?

Of course you are, because that band doesn't exist.

They bucked all standard practices and chose to grow up in the studio versus standing in front of 16 year old fans at oversold baseball stadiums with shitty acoustics.

So they stop touring in 1966 and what did they come up with?
How about these two gems?

A Day in the Life

“A Day in the Life” represents the peak of the middle-period Beatles, when no sonic stone was left unturned and every trip to the studio was an opportunity to do something no one else had ever done before. This Sgt. Pepper closer takes the “We Can Work It Out” John/Paul formula and fires it down Alice’s rabbit hole. The frame of the song is a gorgeous Lennon ballad, mixing real-life tragedy (the death of the young Guinness heir, Tara Browne) with stream-of-consciousness canoe paddlings, filling the Albert Hall with holes and splashing English imperialism on the silver screen, to the horror of the movie house. This piece on its own would have been noteworthy for its melodic beauty and lyrical adventurousness. But the Lennon bit is merely the foundation of something much more grand. An almost anarchic orchestral climb sends the listener to another place entirely – a bell-clear, everyday, up-out-of-bed-and-off-to-work place that seems comparatively mundane until the character has a smoke and goes into a dream. Then the world explodes again, with an ethereal, almost primordial vocal from Lennon sending the listener back to his own soundscape. This time, when the Lennon verse ends, all bets are off. We launch into an orchestral crescendo that hurtles headlong until the crash of that oh-so-famous final chord. Easily, this is pop music’s finest moment.

Phew.

and how about this one?

Strawberry Fields Forever

“Strawberry Fields Forever,” written in part about the garden where John Lennon (he was one of the Beatles) played as a child, is the sound of John questioning his sanity as the world swirls around him. A mellotron saunters along, horns blurt, a swarmandal (look it up) rains down, cymbals crash backward and nay-saying cellos saw at a tree, where John sits alone and wonders if he’s “high or low.” Sped-up, slowed-down, piled high with sonic elements and polished off with a little “cranberry sauce,” “Strawberry Fields” changed what a pop song could sound like. It stopped countless musical peers in their tracks – including Brian Wilson, who decided The Beatles had beaten him to creating the music he had idealized in his mind. It remains a bizarre, haunting and beautifully warped wonder.

Maybe this explains it better...The Beatles in 1967 were holding an aquarium full of tropical fish and everyone else was holding up blue construction paper colored with four crayola crayons.

So, these examples are just the tip of the iceberg. Don't get me started.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion and I welcome yours.

I'll leave you with this...

Her name was Magil and she called herself Lil
But everyone knew her as Nancy

It was twenty years ago today

Well, actually it was one year ago today.
One year ago today I wrote my first blog. I've attached it to the bottom of this post..for old times sake.

63 posts...that's more than one a week. That's more times than I've vacuumed the house in the last year, For reals.

I've had a few decent blogs...two of my favorites were both two parters (and since I've never been shy about shameless self promotion) I'll share them with you now. In case you missed them the first time, enjoy. If you've already read them, treat it like a library book, and take it out again.

First, my day with Christopher Walken
http://pompatusofpete.blogspot.com/2012/03/my-day-with-christopher-walken-part-one.html

and part two...
http://pompatusofpete.blogspot.com/2012/04/my-day-with-christopher-walken-part-two.html

Then there was the infamous hold up story...another two parter
http://pompatusofpete.blogspot.com/2011/10/this-is-one.html
and this
http://pompatusofpete.blogspot.com/2011/10/this-is-one-twoor-this-is-one-tooor.html

and for good measure, maybe the one about my good friend Stephen King and the Boston Red Sox (who are currently not my good friends)
http://pompatusofpete.blogspot.com/2011/12/whos-guy-that-writes-those-books.html

So that's it, a bit of rehashing, which, come to think of it has been a fairly common thread through most of these.

Anyone want to lay odds on me making it to September 15 2013?
The smart money is on probably not.

Almost forgot....here's my post from one year ago.....
___________________________________________________________
Going to give this a go.
Nobody has ever said to me, "why don't you write a blog?" I never even considered it until my lovely wife asked me last night, "What's that song that goes - I really love your peaches want to shake your tree?" After my quick answer (music trivia has always been a personal strength - some folks can build things, I can tell you Badfingers top three hits). When I got to the pompatus of love line I thought to myself, "now that's a great word and doesn't get nearly the play it deserves", hence, this ridiculous endeavour on my part. That's how my brain works. Maybe at some point I'll actually bother to learn how to create a layout beyond the kindergarten level that is this first crack. So it goes.

Don't know what to expect, how often I'll post, or if I'll have anything interesting to share. A few things I do know...this will suck for awhile...I expect nothing beyond rank amateurism for quite some time..probably won't land on a theme or style (other than the parentheses and dot dot dot...that I obviously use as my fall back punctuation).

Sure there will be the occasional flash of genius - like the awesomeness of the name of my blog- but more often than not it will be the meandering and noodling style that I'm currently employing, but all things considered...who doesn't love to meander and noodle once in awhile.
Speaking of noodles, here's what Mr. Noodle does with a banana...

(the sole reason for that was to see if I could execute a link)

Anyway, don't know how to share this...if anyone would read it anyway...or if this is my first and last.

Betty better butter Brad's bread

That , my friends, is a tongue twister.
This blog, my friends, is a list.

You know my penchant for lists...referenced many times in past blogs, but none since my New Year's resolutions list (some of which I've still not broken)
http://pompatusofpete.blogspot.com/2011/12/take-five.html

Well, it's time for another one....and that was so last year. Literally.

I now present to you THE DEFINITIVE LIST OF THE 7 BEST OPENING LINES IN MUSIC.
Like my other lists, there is no disputing this list. You may have your own opinions, but they would be (like the other times) wrong.

Why seven do you ask ?...well because I started this out as twelve, but it was getting way to convoluted and became imminently clear to me that that I had to winnow it down a bit, hence the seven.
To avoid confusion (and because I like adding color to my blogs) my comments will be in red. The lyrics themselves will be in black. Got it?

Oh, I'll post a couple of the videos to a few of these, but mostly just the album covers (yes, albums...for crying out loud). Do yourself a favor...if any of these are unfamiliar to you, please, by all means, search them out and take a listen. Then thank me the next time you see me.

So, without further ado...
THE DEFINITIVE LIST OF THE BEST OPENING LINES IN MUSIC

7) Joe Jackson - Is She Really Going out with Him?

Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street.
From my window I'm staring as my coffee grows cold.

What adolescent boy hasn't experienced these feelings, put so eloquently forth by Joe Jackson here? Christ, this practically brings back all three years of junior high for me in one line.

6). Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
You get a shiver in the dark
It's raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel alright when you hear that music ring.

I am SO there. Outside on a cold drizzly evening...walking along a riverbank. You hear this incredible sound off in the distance-(although, for the life of me, I'm not so sure about the "Dixie double four time"...I've got a feeling it don't sound nothing like this song, but I love the description).
Love this song. No way it's not making the list.

5) Bob Dylan - Watching the River Flow

What's the matter with me,
I don't have much to say,
Daylight sneakin' through the window
And I'm still in this all-night cafe.
Walkin' to and fro beneath the moon
Out to where the trucks are rollin' slow,
To sit down on this bank of sand
And watch the river flow.

Another river song (funny, I always thought I was more of an ocean guy??). It's the juxtaposition (there's that word again) between laziness and restlessness. What's it gonna be Bob..up all night in this cafe', walking aimlessly under the setting moon, or sitting on the riverbank and do nothing but watch the river going by? Can't you feel it? Can't you? At least a little bit? Sure you can!

4) Bruce Springsteen - Blinded By The Light

Madman drummers bummers and indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder feelin kinda older I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing the calliope crashed to the ground

Stop it. Now. I could have included all 50 lines to this song, the lyrics are so ridiculously convoluted and brilliant, but I have to stick to the premise of just the opening lines, I'm keeping my promise. I was going to tackle this one once in one of my "true meaning behind the lyrics blogs" similar to thishttp://pompatusofpete.blogspot.com/2011/10/why-didnt-he-just-say-that-in-first.html...but the lyrics were so incredibly obtuse that I couldn't even begin to come up with the requisite skewering of the lyrics to squeeze even one drop of humor out of it. It was way too tough. At least I didn't think I was up for the task at the time....but now that I've laid down the proverbial gauntlet, who knows?
3) Elvis Costello - Radio Radio
I was tuning in the shine on the light night dial
Doing anything my radio advised
With every one of those late night stations
Playing songs bringing tears to my eyes

I know some of you are too young to believe, or even relate to this, but there was a time when radio mattered. Music wasn't all accessible as it is now...no itunes, no digital downloads, no music floating above us in the stratosphere. There was a time when google didn't exist....we needed to use dictionaries, and even...I hope you're sitting down...ENCYCLOPEDIAS. No kidding, there used to be these vast volumes of books that you had to look through and research to get the answers to life's mysteries...these books were SO voluminous, that you couldn't even fit all of the information in one book...sometimes ONE LETTER wouldn't even fit into one book. Mind blowing I know, but true. Oh, and if you missed the one night Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer was on, that was it. You were SOL until next year. That sucked. That happened to me one year because we had to go see this house on Summit street in Portland that did his yard up in a BIG WAY at Christmas...it would pull people from all over Greater Portland to look at his plastic snowmen and inflated snowglobes and decorated trees and Charlie Brown figures and ...................................................
PHEW
Enough of the rant, I like this one because it brings me back to listening to the radio in bed at night , waiting for your favorite song to come on. That's all.
2) The Band - The Weight

I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead
I just need some place where I can lay my head
"Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand, "no" was all he said
C'mon, what's not to love about this one? Don't you love the image of this meeting? That one line "He just grinned and shook my hand, "no" was all he said" might be my favorite line. EVER. IN ANY SONG. OF ALL TIME. Seriously.
Finally....down to number one. Per usual, these lists don't actually have much substance, in regard to what the list is supposed to be about, now, does it? That's not the point though...it's about the journey. Sometimes the journey is to nowhere, but one I hope you enjoy going along with me.
OK. Number one.1) The Beatles - In My Life
There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all

No way I'm not going with a Beatles song as number one. This one does it for me.... Play this one at my funeral and I'll be smiling down on you (or, God forbid, smiling up at you)...play this one at my daughter's weddings...play this one at the local hopscotch tournament...play it loud...play it soft. Just play it. Repeatedly. Let it soak into your soul and be at one with your DNA. You'll be a better person because of it. Trust me. Would I lie to you ?
So that's it. My top seven opening lyrics of all time. No debating allowed. You'd be wrong and I am right.
....except I've already changed my mind about four of these...and it will be all seven by tomorrow.
Have fun.
